Saint-Gervais
If you’re seeking a ski destination with genuine character, sweeping scenery, and a vast ski domain, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is a standout choice. Sitting at the gateway to Mont Blanc, this historic spa town delivers a seamless blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and world-class skiing.
Unlike many purpose-built resorts, Saint-Gervais has grown organically around its thermal baths and Belle Époque architecture. Today, it retains its village charm while offering modern infrastructure and direct access to the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area — one of the largest lift-linked domains in France. With over 400km of pistes spanning Saint-Gervais, Megève, Combloux, Les Contamines and beyond, you’ll never run out of terrain to explore.
The main base sits at 850m, with lifts whisking you up to the ski station of Le Bettex at 1,400m and onwards to higher elevations with panoramic views of Mont Blanc. The resort’s position means you’re skiing in the heart of the Alps but away from the crowds of the larger, more commercial resorts nearby. It’s ideal for those looking for a more authentic, laid-back experience without compromising on access to serious skiing.
Saint-Gervais is also one of the few resorts in France where you can combine mountain sports with wellness. Its thermal spa complex, Les Thermes, has been drawing visitors for over 200 years, and is still one of the town’s highlights today.
Whether you’re carving fresh tracks on the pistes, relaxing in a mountain-view jacuzzi, or soaking up the atmosphere of the weekly village market, Saint-Gervais offers a well-rounded and rewarding alpine escape. Add in a growing selection of luxury chalets, and it’s no surprise this resort is a favourite amongst our guests.
St Gervais Resort
Saint-Gervais is spread across a steep-sided valley and a series of hillside hamlets, each offering a different perspective on mountain life for your luxury ski getaway. The main town sits at 850m and has developed over centuries as a spa destination, long before skiing arrived. It retains its elegant, lived-in feel, with traditional buildings, artisan shops, and a year-round population.
Le Fayet, at the base of the valley, is the transport hub with direct train links to Geneva and Paris. It’s home to Les Thermes — the town’s famous thermal spa — and offers easy access via the Mont Blanc Tramway or by road to the main resort.
The central village of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains acts as the resort’s heart. Its cobbled streets, weekly market and Belle Époque architecture give it a distinct personality. From here, the main gondola whisks skiers up to Le Bettex, the gateway to the slopes.
Le Bettex, at 1,400m, is the most convenient location for ski access, offering a selection of chalets and residences with direct links to the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area. It’s quieter than the town below, with stunning views and a more immediate connection to the mountains.
Just above, Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce is a peaceful alpine village with access to some of the area’s highest and most scenic slopes. It’s a favourite for those looking for seclusion and alpine authenticity, with a handful of well-appointed chalets and a renowned gourmet hotel restaurant.
Further afield, satellite hamlets like Les Communailles and Mont d’Arbois offer tranquil surroundings and easy links to the wider ski network, especially for those with a car or private driver.
With reliable lift connections and wide-ranging accommodation options, all of Saint-Gervais’ villages feel well linked — whether you’re after vibrant town life or a tucked-away mountain retreat.
Saint-Gervais Travel & Transport
It’s easy to get around Saint-Gervais-les-Bains once you arrive, thanks to its compact town centre, efficient lift access, and a network of public buses connecting nearby hamlets and resorts. The gondola from the town links directly to the ski area at Le Bettex, while the historic Mont Blanc Tramway provides scenic access to mountain terrain and hiking routes.
Here’s our expert guide on reaching Saint-Gervais:
Travelling by car
Driving to Saint-Gervais is straightforward via the French autoroute system. From Geneva, take the A40 towards Chamonix and exit at Le Fayet. From there, the D902 winds gently up to the town centre. The final stretch is well maintained but can be busy on weekends and holidays — snow chains or winter tyres are strongly advised in snowy conditions.
Parking is available throughout the resort, with both outdoor and underground options in Saint-Gervais town and Le Fayet. If you’re staying in Le Bettex or one of the satellite hamlets, check whether your chalet includes private parking. You won’t need your car during your stay, especially if you’re near the gondola or using local shuttle services.
Travelling by train
Taking the train to Saint-Gervais is both practical and eco-friendly. The nearest station is Saint-Gervais-les-Bains–Le Fayet, which sits just 5 minutes from the town centre by road. It’s served by regional TER services and connects easily from major hubs like Geneva, Annecy, and Paris (via Bellegarde or Annecy).
If you’re arriving during peak weekends, we recommend pre-booking a taxi or shuttle transfer to your chalet, particularly if staying in Le Bettex, Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, or higher-altitude areas.

Helicopter transfers can also be arranged to the nearby Megève Altiport for the fastest arrival possible.
Saint-Gervais Restaurants
Saint-Gervais-les-Bains has a relaxed yet rewarding dining scene, centred around the historic town and stretching up to the quieter corners of Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce and Le Bettex. With a mix of family-run bistros, alpine inns, and contemporary fine dining, there’s something for every style of evening or afternoon.
In the town
Le Sérac is one of the standout spots in the centre of Saint-Gervais. With sleek interiors and a menu that changes seasonally, it’s the place to go for refined French cuisine and carefully selected wines. Ideal for special occasions or a slow, elegant evening after skiing.
For something more intimate, Source is a creative restaurant tucked away near the main square. Expect elevated alpine ingredients prepared with flair. Think roasted root vegetables with smoked trout, or beef with a spicy “tiger’s tears” jus. It’s inventive, thoughtful cooking in a laid-back setting.
If you’re in the mood for something hearty and traditional, La Ferme de Cupelin is a firm favourite. Set in a beautifully converted farmhouse above the town, it offers panoramic views and a menu built around mountain classics. From slow-braised meats to indulgent cheeses, everything is beautifully presented and locally sourced.
For alpine comfort food in a cosy chalet setting, head to Le Galeta. Wood-panelled walls and flickering candlelight set the tone for an evening of fondue, raclette, and tartiflette — exactly what you want after a snowy day. Meanwhile, L’Eterle is a casual option with excellent pizzas, generous pasta dishes, and a friendly, bustling atmosphere that’s ideal for families.
Just up in Le Bettex, you’ll find Les Becs à Bosses. It’s a small, welcoming mountain-style restaurant known for its generous portions and friendly staff. It’s a great spot to refuel if you’re staying close to the slopes.
On the slopes
Dining on the mountain in Saint-Gervais is more low-key than in the mega-resorts, but there are still some real gems. Le Gouet, tucked beside a small drag lift near Mont Joux, is a rustic wooden chalet serving hearty daily specials and homemade desserts. It’s popular with locals and has a sun-soaked terrace that’s ideal in good weather.
On the run down from Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, Les Communailles has a simple yet satisfying menu and a warm welcome. Expect tartiflette, omelettes, and homemade cakes served with mountain views.
For a more elevated experience, book a table at L’Escale near the Mont d’Arbois sector. Though technically in the Megève-linked area, it’s easily accessible from Saint-Gervais and known for its panoramic terrace and quality cuisine. Their daily specials often include grilled meats and house-made ravioli.
Saint-Gervais Apres & Nightlife
Après-ski in Saint-Gervais is more understated than in larger resorts, but there’s still plenty of atmosphere to enjoy. At the base of the Bettex gondola, Oboose Café is a popular spot to gather for an early drink. With live music and DJs during peak weeks, it’s a lively venue for skiers heading back into town.
In the heart of the village, Pur Bar brings a stylish feel to the après scene. It serves up creative cocktails and local beers in a warm, contemporary setting, and hosts regular music nights and happy hours. It’s particularly popular with couples and groups looking for a sociable but more relaxed vibe.
For classic French après-ski, make the trip up to La Folie Douce above Mont Joux — accessible via skis from Saint-Gervais or Megève. The iconic slope-side venue blends high-energy cabaret, DJs, and gourmet dining. If you’re looking for a full mountain party experience, this is the place to be.
Saint-Gervais Ski Area
Saint-Gervais-les-Bains forms part of the vast Évasion Mont-Blanc ski domain — one of the largest linked ski areas in France, with over 445km of pistes. It connects seamlessly with neighbouring resorts like Megève, Combloux, La Giettaz, and Les Contamines, offering an extraordinary variety of terrain. One of the biggest advantages of staying in a luxury chalet in Saint-Gervais is how effortlessly you can access the slopes. From the main town, the Bettex gondola takes you directly into the ski area, with plenty of options for ski-in ski-out or short-walk properties.
The ski area
Saint-Gervais’ local area boasts 120km of marked pistes, ranging from quiet beginner zones to thrilling off-piste descents. From the top of Mont Joux, at 2,350m, the views stretch across the entire Mont Blanc massif. Wide blues dominate the Mont d’Arbois and Mont Joux sectors, while tree-lined runs cut through the lower parts of Le Bettex and Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce — a saviour on snowy or low-visibility days.
The Évasion Mont-Blanc lift pass gives you access to six resorts, meaning you can ski for a week without repeating the same runs. From Saint-Gervais, you can explore all the way over to Megève’s Jaillet and Rochebrune sectors, or head the other way toward the more secluded pistes of Les Contamines. Thanks to the vast size and spread of the area, queues are rare, and the terrain remains surprisingly uncrowded, even in high season.
Boarders
Saint-Gervais is an easy win for snowboarders. The pistes are wide and well-groomed, with relatively few drag lifts to contend with. The Snowpark Salomon, located at Col de Voza, features boxes, kickers, and rails, with lines graded by ability. The natural shape of the terrain also creates playful banks and side hits across many of the pistes, especially around Mont Joux and Mont d’Arbois.
Beginners will enjoy mellow terrain and progressive features, while more advanced freestyle riders can explore the wider park system shared with Les Houches.
Beginners
Saint-Gervais is well set up for beginner skiers. There are nursery slopes at Le Bettex and Mont d’Arbois, each with covered magic carpets and gentle gradients. The main learning zones are wide and open, with plenty of space to build confidence. Once you’re ready to explore, long green runs like the “Piste des Crêtes” offer scenic routes back into the mid-station areas.
A reduced-price beginner lift pass is available, and the ESF and Oxygène ski schools both operate here, offering small-group and private lessons. The calm, uncrowded nature of the resort makes it especially welcoming for first-timers and nervous learners.
Our recommended ski schools:
- ESF Saint-Gervais – The official French ski school with wide-ranging lessons for adults, children, and total beginners.
- Oxygène Ski & Snowboard School – Known for their warm, English-speaking instructors and tailored instruction in both group and private settings.
- Evolution 2 (via Megève) – Available to those skiing beyond Saint-Gervais, offering guiding, off-piste, and adaptive instruction.
Intermediates
Intermediate skiers are spoilt for choice here. Long, flowing blues link Le Bettex to Mont Joux and beyond, while red runs such as “Les Garettes” and “La Chamois” provide more of a challenge without being too technical. The slopes are ideal for covering mileage, and the links to Combloux and Megève open up full-day circuits.
The Saint-Nicolas sector is a quiet gem, perfect for carving down peaceful pistes surrounded by forests. Mont Joly also offers fantastic, uncrowded reds with dramatic views — one of the best spots to escape the crowds and really enjoy the terrain.
If you’re planning to explore the full Évasion area, keep an eye on the clock — especially when heading across to Megève or Les Contamines, as it can be a long journey back.
Advanced
While not as extreme as some of the more famous freeride resorts, Saint-Gervais offers some serious terrain for advanced skiers. The Côte 2000 sector, shared with Megève, is home to black runs like “Marmotte”, which are often used for training and race preparation. Conditions can be excellent here early in the day.
There’s also plenty of accessible off-piste, particularly around the Mont Joly ridgeline and under the top lifts of Mont Joux. Snow conditions here tend to hold well thanks to elevation and aspect, but a guide is strongly recommended to make the most of it and ensure safety.
For mogul lovers, “Princesse” above Le Bettex offers a steep and consistent pitch, while the terrain around Les Contamines features natural bowls and couloirs for more adventurous descents.
Weather
With elevations ranging from 850m in the village to 2,353m at the top of the ski area, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains offers a diverse climate that ensures reliable snow conditions throughout the winter season. The resort’s position on the western flank of the Mont Blanc massif contributes to consistent snowfall, while its varied terrain provides options for all weather conditions.

Things To Do In Saint-Gervais-les-Bains
Non-skiers will find plenty to enjoy in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, with activities ranging from spa days to snowy adventures. If you’re joining a ski group but prefer to take things slower, we recommend picking up a pedestrian lift pass. This allows you to ride up the gondola and enjoy mountain lunches, panoramic views, or après-ski gatherings without stepping into skis.
The iconic Mont Blanc Tramway is a must-do for visitors. This historic cogwheel railway climbs from the valley floor to the Bellevue Plateau, offering stunning views over the Mont Blanc range. From the top, you can access winter walking trails or simply sit back and take in the scenery with a warm drink in hand.

Follow the signposted snowshoe trails through peaceful pine forests, or we can help you book a guided tour to learn more about the local wildlife and landscape. And for the ultimate high-altitude perspective, helicopter tours can be arranged through local providers.
On bad weather days or when you’re in need of a rest, Saint-Gervais excels at indoor relaxation. The Les Thermes thermal spa is one of the oldest and most celebrated in the Alps. Fed by natural hot springs, the spa offers an indulgent array of pools, saunas, steam rooms, and treatments — all with views of the surrounding peaks. Several hotels in the area also offer spa facilities, including indoor pools, hot tubs, and massage rooms open to non-residents. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a morning walk or a day on the slopes.
For a dose of local culture, take a walk through the town centre and explore its Belle Époque architecture, artisan shops, and small galleries. There’s often an exhibition or local market running, especially during the winter season. Don’t miss the Baroque Church in Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, known for its intricate interiors and alpine religious heritage.
