Gstaad Restaurants

Gstaad’s food scene is hearty and creative, combining local fare and international cuisines. There are more than 100 restaurants to choose from and this resort is a consistent earner of Gault Millau points.

In the town

There are plenty of opportunities for a traditional Swiss meal. Le Petit Chalet has limited seating, so you can enjoy their truffle fondue in intimate settings. Or experience Michelin- starred Chesery, which has been converted from an old cheese dairy. For something a little different, purchase your Fondueland rucksack, complete with truffle fondue, crusty bread, and all the tools to cook a delicious meal. Choose from 5 outdoor areas to enjoy your food before tobogganing back to the village.

For more international cuisine, Chubut have created an Argentinian-Swiss fusion restaurant that will transport you to the Patagonian mountains. The Alpina Hotel has an exciting array of fine dining. Michelin starred Sommet is one of the best restaurants in Switzerland and takes influence from cuisines around the world. Or try their top sushi restaurant Megu, which also has a Michelin star. Innovative and stylish, their sashimi and sparkling sake are highly regarded.

On the slopes

Slope-side lunches here are well known for cosy wooden mountain huts and authentic alpine favourites. Mostly positioned at the top of larger lifts, they provide easy access for non-skiers to meet for lunch.

Berghaus Horneggli is popular for fresh, regional dishes. Dine in the homely 200-year-old chalet, or sit out on the rustic terrace and enjoy views from 1,770m. Also in Eggli, Gourmet Mobil is a pop-up restaurant serving up top culinary experiences with a scenic mountain backdrop.

Bergrestaurant La Videmanette includes your ascent and descent in the cost of their mountain lunch. At an altitude of 2,200m, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Bernese and Vaud Alps. For something more relaxed, Bergrestaurant Wasserngrat and Bergrestaurant Rinderberg-Spitz are self service restaurants that provide regional specialties and panoramic views.

Gstaad Apres & Nightlife

While it is not well known for its nightlife, après ski in Gstaad is relaxed, sophisticated and offers something for everyone. Cosy venues are the perfect place to escape the cold and there is a high concentration of chic lounge bars offering ideal locations for an aperitif.

Mountain views, vin chaud and sunny terraces are the perfect way to wrap up a day on the slopes.

  •         Berghaus Egglihas a snug and homely interior or a large terrace that is perfect for relaxing in the sun
  •         Super exclusive Eagle Ski clubwas founded in 1957 and is in a chalet sitting on top of a private mountain

Back in town there is a great selection of bars and cafes which begin to fill up as people descend from the slopes.

  •         English ownedRichi’s Pub is a popular local favourite, serving down to earth food and pub classics.
  •         Perch on a hay bale around the fire at the Ice Dome’s Laurent Perrier bar. Here you can skate while listening to live DJs.
  •         The Yurtis a pop-up bar and events space which will provide a unique and intimate après experience.

For those keen to extend the night, there is a good selection of bars and clubs that will help you to get dancing.

  •         The Palace Hotel has a 1970s themed nightclub called GreenGo. Equally cheesy and superb, this is the place to be for dancing and colourful lighting.
  •         Cheesery Piano baroffers live music and a games area, before turning into a club after midnight.

Ski Zone

Gstaad Ski Area

Gstaad’s ski area is family friendly with fantastic runs for all abilities. The glacier ski area provides snow sure conditions which helps to extend the winter season. Slopes here are very well groomed and the lifts are modern and efficient. If you would like to stretch your ski time into the evening, head to the Rinderberg, where you can enjoy night skiing across illuminated slopes.

The ski area

All areas are linked by efficient train and bus services, making exploring wonderful terrain a seamless process.

·          Glacier 3000 is the largest sector and promises excellent snow conditions. The return to the valley can be taken by a newly created red or along a long meandering black.

·          Rinderberg is best suited to intermediates, although there are some pleasant options for beginners here too. The tree lined slopes are a solid choice when visibility is poor.

·          Eggli has a generous selection of blues and plenty of sunny terraces to stop for refreshments.

·          Wassengrat and Wispile are smaller but an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Wassengrat is home to the famous Tiger Run.

Boarders

Snowboarders are spoiled for choice in Gstaad, with uncrowded slopes, well-groomed piste and plenty of backcountry to discover. Saanenmöser and Schönried are preferred due to their easy access, with Saanenmöser containing wide, easy runs for newer boarders.

Head to Saanen with a guide to experience some excellent powder fields. There are 4 snow parks to choose from, with the best being at Rinderberg.

Beginners

Gstaad is a wonderful resort to learn in due to its quiet and well-groomed piste. There are beginner’s areas in each section with private lifts, offering flexibility if travelling in a mixed ability group. Wispile and Eggli are close to the town, making the descent after a hard day’s learning relaxed and convenient. When ready to progress to the main slopes, there are lovely, treelined runs from these two areas back into the centre.

Our recommended ski schools:

·          Alpinzentrum started as a mountain climbing school but is now well renowned for their high-quality ski lessons. Children will have access to a private slope so that they can get the most out of their lessons.

·          Gstaad Snowsports are a fun option for children. They have a kids snow village with a carousel and various attractions.

·          Altitude are established across Switzerland and have private and group lessons for many abilities.

Intermediates

An intermediate’s paradise, there is an array of well-connected blues and reds to explore. Reds are long and rolling, making this the perfect resort is you love to cruise. Schönreid and Saanenmöser have some nice tree lined blues and reds for when visibility is poor. Head to the longest slope, La Videmanette, which combines reds and blues to create a varied descent and unintimidating route for newer skiers who are ready to progress. The summit at Olden is a must visit just to witness the stunning views.

Advanced

Glacier 3000 has some more challenging reds for your first days back on the slopes. Then head to La Videmanette resort, which is popular for expert skiers. There is a large selection of difficult blacks around the impressive limestone pillars of le Rubli. The iconic Tiger Run at Wasserngrat is the region’s steepest slope and is sure to put your fitness levels to the test.

In April, you can take advantage of freeriding days here where all abilities can explore fresh powder with a guide. Heli-skiing is a popular option in Gstaad with many landing spots on the nearby mountains.

Weather

Gstaad is a popular mountain destination year-round. The Glacier 3000 and artificial snow promises a long winter season with good snow conditions. From October until May, the glacier provides guaranteed snow cover. However, base areas at lower elevation may not have great snow at the start and end of the season.

January is the snowiest month. Arrive on the last week of the month for the stunning Balloon Château-d’Oex hot air balloon festival.

Things To Do

Things To Do In Gstaad

Gstaad is a lovely resort for families, with lots of ways for non-skiers to spend their time. Make beautiful memories with a dog sleigh ride on the glacier. Or for a once in a lifetime experience, take a hot air balloon high above the mountains.

Shopping in Gstaad is almost as big an attraction as the slopes. The very best selection of businesses have been curated to operate here. It is a haven to search for luxury items, with international and exclusive designer boutiques lining the main street. If you are interested in fresh and organic ingredients, there is a delightful selection of local farm shops to browse. Finish a day of shopping in one of the many elegant cafes, with a hot chocolate by the fire or out on the heated terrace.

The sports centre has a range of activities on offer, including bowling, climbing and table tennis. There is also an ice rink in the centre of town and some opportunities for tobogganing. Take the lift up to Glacier 3000, where there are a range of activities on offer and the chance to cross the only suspension bridge across 2 mountain peaks. This is also a great place to catch a magical sunset.

For a charming day trip, head to Gruyeres. The mediaeval town is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. It is home to the Chateau St Germain, a gothic castle that hosts art exhibits. Wonder the Tibet Museum and enjoy the H.R Giger Museum and bar. And of course, it would be rude not to sample the many cheesy specialties on offer.

If you are using your winter break to unwind, the stunning Six Senses Spa has exceptional facilities, including a salt room and hydrotherapy. They offer a variety of wellness programs and retreats focused on detox and healing.
