Saas Fee Resort
Saas Fee sits nearby the Italian border, at the foot of the towering Dom. At 4545m, this is the highest mountain in Switzerland. Altitude seekers will be in heaven, with a multitude of peaks reaching over 4000m.
The idyllic village rests at 1800m and is celebrated for its charming appearance and good natured après scene. Its low profile has maintained an authentic atmosphere and feels less crowded than more famous resorts in the area. Saas Fee Travel & Transport
Away from the fumes and noise of traffic, a stay in Saas Fee will leave you serene and rested. It is small and easily walkable, but there are other ways to explore the town if required. There are free shuttle buses between the ski lifts and buses to the nearby villages. Milk float style electric cars provide quirky etaxi services.
Flying is a popular option due to Saas Fee’s close vicinity to a number of airports. The train is a relaxing way to travel into the mountains. Driving is not a popular choice due to the lack of usefulness your car has once you have arrived at the resort. However, private transfers are easy to arrange.
Travelling by car
You will be asked to leave your car in the covered parking spaces at the entrance to the village. It is simple to arrange a discounted parking fare by obtaining a visitor card. You can transfer your luggage by using one of the etaxis or with a handcart.
Travelling by train
The nearest train station is Visp. You can complete the remaining 27km via taxi. Or alternatively, a bus departs from outside the station every 30 minutes.

In the town
Michelin-starred Fletschhorn is a popular choice for those seeking fine dining. Expect traditional Swiss fayre and a vast selection of wine. Another fine dining option is Michelin- starred Avru Stuba, one of the longest established restaurants in the resort. Its rustic style is combined with a fresh range of dishes. You can also head to their Steinbeck bar in the basement to continue your evening.
If you love rostis, head to the restaurant at the 280-year-old Hotel Dom. A more informal choice could be dü, where you share large tables with other guests and enjoy traditional Valaisian food. Another casual dining spot is Rotisserie du Sport, which serves 15 different types of grilled meat.
On the slopes
Of course a trip to Saas Fee should include a trip to the highest revolving restaurant in the world. At 3,500m Allalin on Mittelallalin will give you panoramic views of the surrounding glaciers and the 4000m peaks while enjoying seasonal dishes. While here, also visit the Ice Pavillion which is the world’s largest ice grotto.
For fine dining at altitude, visit Michelin starred Speilboden. Family friendly Hannig serves beautifully presented dishes which you can enjoy while warming up in their cosy lounge or out on the sunny terrace. For a hearty experience, Waldhüs Bodmen will welcome you into their traditional Swiss inn. Enjoy home style cooking in a magical location.
Saas Fee Apres & Nightlife
There are many bars and discos, making Saas Fee a big attraction for those seeking a fun après scene. Relaxed sunset drinks turn into lively parties as the night draws to a close.
On the mountain you will mostly find mountain restaurants with large sun terraces. The most popular bars are at the base of the lifts so the real party will begin after your descent into the resort.
- No. One is easy to ski to and has plenty of spaces for relaxing in the sun while enjoying a mulled wine.
- Ski straight to the Larix, whose newly renovated après bar features a large sun terrace and live music.
- Expect the whole town to descend upon the Black Bull. This après ski hut has a large sun terrace and outdoor bar, where a DJ will play your favourite mountain hits from lifts closing through to the early hours of the morning.
There are plenty of bars you can head to for a relaxed drink before you prepare for another day on the slopes.
- Steinbock Bar has a traditional feel and intimate setting. It is the perfect place for a romantic drink or long conversations.
- The lounge bar at the Walliserhof Hotel is a chic place to enjoy a cocktail. Perch by the modern fireplace or unwind in their cigar lounge.
- Metro is a small and friendly bar with quirky décor and an excellent selection of cocktails.
Many of the bars in Saas Fee turn into discos as the night wears on, so it can be incredibly easy to lose track of time and end up staying out later than expected.
- Easy Bar starts out as a relaxed place to unwind after dinner. But do not be fooled. Once the music is turned up the place will come alive. The cosy and warm cellar is transformed into an underground rave party.
- Aussie Bar is a local favourite. Shots will be flowing and the dancefloor is always full.
- Poison Club are popular for their electronic music scene. Expect wild parties continuing until 4am.
Saas Fee Ski Area
Explore 150km of well-groomed piste and cruise at altitudes up to 3600m. Families and mixed groups can relax because all runs finish back at the village and it is difficult to get lost. Saas Fee is an ideal resort for beginners and young children, but expert skiers will find a few slopes to get their adrenaline flowing. The panoramic views are sure to be the highlight of your trip. It will be hard to tear your eyes away from the huge peaks and breath-taking glaciers as you make your way down the mountains.
The ski area
The ski areas from Saas Fee are not linked by lifts or piste but you can get from one area to the other by using the regular free buses. There are 3 main areas:
- The Saas Fee area is most well-known for the activities around Mittelallalin- why not take a ride on Europe’s first funicular railway? But head to Morenia for enjoyable intermediate choices.
- From Saas Grund head up to Hohsaas for wide, sunny slopes. Continue further up the mountain for some more difficult glacier slopes.
- Saas Almagell is a medium sized area that is great for families and relaxed cruising. Here you can ski 700m of connecting red runs all the way back to the base.
Boarders
Terrain here can be steep but with dependable snow, so is very suitable for snowboarding. There are plenty of fun slopes, many of which are ideal for carving. Wander over to Mittelallalin for stunning views and wide-open piste. Freeriding is limited due to the risk of crevasses around the glacier, but head to Platjen for some boarding though the trees.
Freestylers should go to Morenia, which is a large park with many lines for different abilities. There is another Freestyle Park at Mittelallalin which is open for most of the year and has a variety of activities, including a place to rest with music in the chill zone. Beginners can also check out the freestyle beginner’s area by the nursery slopes.
Boarders should be aware that T-Bars are popular here, so if you weren’t confident on them before, you certainly will be by the end of this trip. Also, beware of some flatter sections on the blue runs if you struggle to maintain speed.
Beginners
Saas Fee is a wonderful place for beginners with plenty of green and blue runs for those looking to progress. There is a nursery area next to the village which can be accessed with a discounted lift pass. It is sheltered and has consistent snow cover, but wrap up warm as it doesn’t get a lot of sun. Alternatively, head up to Heidbodme for the Kinderland Furggstalden, which has snowtubes and a comic book parcours. When you have mastered the basics, the usual recommendation is to try the green and blue runs between Felskinn and Morenia.
Our recommended ski schools:
- ESKIMOS has been teaching snow sports for 20 years. They teach small groups of children, teenagers and adults in groups of maximum 6 people, so you will get plenty of 1 to 1 time with the instructors.
- Schweizer Ski School is a good option for children. They take a playful approach to learning to ski and include extra social activities to help kids get to know their classmates.
- Optimum Snowports is a British school that offers starter, performance and technical lessons for children and adults.
Intermediates
Intermediates will find plenty of variety, with all 3 ski areas containing blue and red runs. Head to Morenia to practice your turns on wide open slopes. Heldbodme is great for families and mixed groups. It reaches heights of 2,400m and has a selection of slopes for a range of abilities. A popular choice for cruising are the red runs at Allalin. To really work your legs, head to the top of the Fee glacier, which starts off steep, but becomes flatter as you descend.
Advanced
While better suited to newer skiers, experts will still be able to find plenty to entertain them. It is recommended to go off-piste with a guide, particularly in Saas Fee as many slopes on the glacier may have crevasses. However, the Nationale at Plattjen has been made an official off-piste run, so is a safer option to explore.
There is some longer and more difficult terrain in Langfluh and Speilboden, including Switzerland’s longest glacier run. Many finish their week by taking on the Black Pearl. At 30km and a vertical drop of 350m, it will certainly feel like an achievement. For more competitive skiers, why not participate in the Adrenaline cup? The daily event allows you to compete in a variety of disciplines against the ski regions in the Saas Valley.
Weather
Saas Fee is an excellent resort to visit year-round. Thanks to the glacier, skiing is available for 10 months of the year. The winter season begins around the end of October and the runs back into resort typically have snow cover well into April.
November/ December
While November is off season, snow during this time is often good and slopes will feel untouched. Expect the resort to fill up as Christmas approaches.

Things To Do In Saas Fee
This is a resort with plenty to do for active and thrill seeking non skiers. As well as snow shoeing, hiking and ice skating, why not try Bavarian curling? Head to the adventure forest to take a 220m zip line through the trees. There is also sledging and night sledging to enjoy. Head to Saas Grund for 11km of slidding alongside beautiful views. The more daring may want to attempt snow tubing at Saas Almagell or Saas Grund. Adventure seekers will enjoy the Gorge Alpine tour, where you can explore frozen waterfalls, climb steep ladders, and cross suspension bridges.
Those seeking rest and relaxation should head to the beautiful Ferienart Hotel. The 1800s renovated lodge houses stone grottos, 7 saunas and a large swimming pool. Make the most of traditional ayurvedic treatments or sample a Wallis hay bath.
The village is a lovely place to wonder through. Enjoy charming, pedestrianised streets and stop in one of the elegant cafes for a hot drink. Shopping is less grand than nearby resorts but you will find exclusive boutiques and independent stores selling authentic local goods.
For an unusual experience, go to one of the smallest and highest beer breweries in Europe. You can take part in workshops to learn the art of brewing. Sip on Gletscher Bräu, also known as glacier beer while listening to fun facts and interesting stories.
